A bodybuilder taking steroids can use a lot more protein than a natural bodybuilder can handle because the drug enables greater nitrogen retention than the human body is designed to handle. If one bodybuilder would get a protein intake of 12 oz per day and the other would get a protein intake of 12 oz per day and they both use the same amount of steroid, both bodybuilders would get a far greater protein surplus from using steroids than the other would from taking a protein supplement. The reason for this surplus in bodybuilding from using steroids is a natural limitation of how bodybuilders are designed to handle protein when they are on steroids. The higher a bodybuilder's protein intake the higher the body mass and strength gains, but more so than a natural weight lift. It is because of this inherent limitation of anabolic steroids which causes them to be a greater deficit for a beginner. It is not a lack of protein intake or inadequate consumption of protein that causes the bodybuilder's protein deficiency on steroids, nor is it simply a loss of protein quality when using anabolic drugs, nor is it simply an overdose of anabolic steroids that causes severe protein deficiencies. The fact that these same bodybuilders can run out of protein on steroids is also the result of the fact that steroids provide higher rates of protein catabolism than normal healthy bodybuilders. In normal healthy individuals, there are 3 amino acids that the body breaks down into: leucine, isoleucine and valine. There are only 3 amino acids that the body catabolizes in a non-catabolic manner, the others being tyrosine and leucine. When bodybuilders on steroids use more leucine or isoleucine than normal normal bodybuilders would, and if they are on anabolic steroids, than these bodybuilders are able to use more leucine and isoleucine than a normal healthy bodybuilder would because they are catabolizing them quicker than they would normally. Once a bodybuilder has used all three amino acids all he will consume is amino acids that cause amino acid catabolism. This is because the bodybuilder is having an excess of amino acids to break down. Bodybuilders on steroids, even if they are on the same total amino acid intake, do not have a higher leucine and isoleucine deficit than normal healthy bodybuilders. In fact, the bodybuilder on the highest percentage of anabolic steroids should be eating less than the bodybuilder with the second highest amount (although he will consume approximately the same amount of both amino acids) because he is breaking down the leucine and isoleucine more quickly than normal healthy bodybuilders.
